There are several ways to overcome an addiction and lead a sober lifestyle:
Cold Turkey
Cold turkey is the hardest way to quit anything. Some people can do it, while it only leads to frustration and feelings of failure for mnay. If you can quit cold turkey, more power to you.
AA or NA Meetings
AA meetings provide a support group, where you can share feelings about why you are an addict, what can we do about it. Most importantly, at an AA meeting you can find a sponsor, someone who will help guide you to sobriety.
Sober Living
Sober living is the next step beyond AA. You live in an environment where everyone should be sober and progressing with their lives. It is sometimes good to see someone come into a sober living house that is still going through withdrawl, it reminds you of where you were, and where you don't want to end up.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment is a more structured program than sober living, where there are staff on hand at all times, counseling sessions and meetings are held regularly, and the basic needs such as food are provided.
Medical Treatment
Medical detox is the most structured form of recovery, and the most expensive. You are in the hospital, under a Doctor's care, to make sure that the detoxification process is made as comfortable and safe as possible. After a medical detox, a residential treatment would be the next logical step.
Insanity
Many an addict gets locked up for wandering the streets and screaming incoherent babblings at people. Not a very pretty or effective way to get sober.
Jail
Today the jails are filled to capacity with drug offenders. Drugs are still available in jail, but the cost and danger make most people get sober. Again, not a very good way to get sober.
Cemetary
For the true hard core addict that will not quit, nothing beats a pine box to stop you from using drugs.
